MOUTHGUARDS FOR BRUXISTS (Teeth Grinding)

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding of teeth which is a dysfunctional habit that may occur during the night but also during the day.

The said habit may cause:

• Headaches
• Pain in the temporomandibular joint
• Muscle pain of head and jaw
• Limited mouth opening (trismus)
• Clicking sound on opening
• Cervical lesions on teeth
• Grinding down teeth chewing surfaces
• Tooth fractures or crown fractures

A mouthguard is a custom-made tray that covers the teeth of a single side of the jaw (lower or upper teeth) and the patient wears it mostly at night in order to protect the teeth from decay. The mouthguard prevents the teeth from closing in their usual position and balances their pressures leading to muscle relaxation and withdrawal of the symptoms of bruxism. Simultaneously, it may help to reduce the habit of teeth grinding.
