EXTRACTIONS

In cases where the prognosis of the tooth is poor and there is no way the tooth can be saved, an extraction is required. Extraction involves removing the tooth from the tooth socket and it is done under dental anesthesia, therefore, it is a painless procedure. In cases of difficult extractions that mainly concern wisdom teeth and where necessary, the patient can be referred to a maxillofacial surgeon.

Indications for extractions:

  • extensive tooth decay that has reached the root
  • severe mobility due to loss of bone from periodontal disease
  • impacted 3rd molars (wisdom teeth)
  • orthodontic reasons
  • deciduous teeth that are impeding with permanent teeth eruption
  • failed root canal treatment that there is no indication for re-treatment
  • fracture of tooth with root complications
